"Notes on a Conditional Form" is the second album to be released by The 1975 as part of their "Music for Cars" era which shares its name with their 2013 EP. The album is a follow up to their 2018 release "A Brief Inquiry into Online Relationships," which explored technologies involvement in all our relationships and how addicted we are to our phones. "NOACF" is going to see these themes being taken further.
So far the band have released seven songs that will be featured on the album. The date for the album’s release was originally the 21 February 2020, it was then pushed back to 24 April and now, we have a final release date of 22 May. The band have, however, released the album artwork and tracklist.
"The 1975" & "People"
"The 1975" features a new climate change speech from the then 16-year-old activist, Greta Thunberg. This speech is calling us all out and telling us to stop fucking up the planet. Following up from the previous track, the band released "People." This is probably one of the bands most confrontational songs to date. The lyrics in this song are, again, calling for us to take action and sort our shit out.
"Frail State Of Mind"
This is quite a disorientating track. It has a garage and almost club feel to it while still channelling the bands pop vibes. It shows a state of anxiety and dread with the lyrics sounding like a conversation Matt Healy is having with himself. Despite it seeming all over the place, it’s worth a listen.
"Me & You Together Song"
This track sees the band return to their roots as it has a similar feel to songs from their previous band title, Drive Like I Do. The song explores how it feels to be young and in love but how this doesn’t always work out. Overall it’s a pretty upbeat song with an equally fun and uplifting music video.
"The Birthday Party"
With this track, we can see the band reiterating previous statements about how addicted we are to technology. This song is all about the music video which sees the band’s front runner, Matt Healy, being transported into a CGI wonderland surround by memes. It also feels like a song you can listen to when you need to escape from the real world.
"Jesus Christ 2005"
Features Phoebe Bridgers for a hauntingly beautiful track. The song has a real emotional and heartfelt quality to it with the lyrics seeming to contemplate faith, belief and love. The stripped-back feel leaves a lasting impression.
"If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)"
Hopefully, this will be the last single released before the album. This song has been stuck in our heads since we first heard it. The song has a classic The 1975 feel to it as it delves deeper into online relationships and is just an all-round belter.
