It’s the year 2020 and it’s about time we got our act together. Sustainability isn’t just a fad, it’s something that everyone needs to be focusing on to combat the growing concern of climate change. We’ve compiled a quick list to get you started and it’s much easier than you’d think.
1. RECYCLE
How many times do we need to say this? Recycling is so important. Loads of products tell you whether or not they can be recycled and if so what they are classed as. It’s not hard. If your apartment complex doesn’t have recycling facilities then go and find the nearest community bin and drop your stuff off there. It’s so easy, it makes us wonder why people aren't doing it already?
2. AVOID PLASTIC
Yeah, we know avoiding plastic can be pretty difficult, especially when it seems everything comes wrapped up in it. But realistically it isn't that difficult. An easy way to start is by bringing a reusable cotton bag with you when you next go shopping. Don’t use those single-use plastic bags for fruit and veg, instead just keep them loose. Some supermarkets even offer refilling stations for things like nuts and grains so why not bring a glass jar with you next time.
3. TRANSPORT
Day-to-day travelling is a necessity for most people. One way to cut down on your carbon footprint is to ditch the car and use public transport. This allows you to share your footprint with other commuters and gives you a chance to sit down and catch up with either a book you’re reading or some work you’ve been putting off. You could also get those steps in if you decide to walk, and you won't have to worry about finding a parking space.
4. BUY SECOND-HAND
Is there any need to still shop at Primark? You can find some absolute gems in second-hand clothing stores and now it’s easier than ever, so many people are starting to donate old clothes to become more sustainable. It’s not only cheap but good for the planet as well. If you are dying to buy something new why not check out some of these amazing brands that are dedicated to producing sustainable clothing.
5. REDUCE YOUR ENERGY
Do you really need the heating on again or do you just need to put another pair of socks on? This is something that you may need to involve other people with, especially if you live in a house-share. Layering up instead of switching the thermostat up can not only save you money but also help in the fight against climate change. Turning off plugs and lights when not in use is another easy way to reduce your energy consumption, there’s no need to recreate Blackpool illuminations in your gaff.
So, as you can see it’s pretty easy to become a little more sustainable when you put your mind to it. We’re sure Greta Thunberg will be very proud of you. Now go spread the word!
